Newcastle United host Arsenal at St James’ Park in the second-leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final meeting knowing that they will confirm their place at Wembley if they avoid defeat against the Gunners. Howe’s side hold a 2-0 advantage heading into Wednesday night’s match following their triumph at the Emirates Stadium last month.
However, the two teams head into this week’s game on the back of contrasting results at the weekend. Here, we look at the injury issues affecting both camps ahead of Newcastle United’s Carabao Cup clash with Arsenal.
Jamaal Lascelles and Harvey Barnes are the only two definite injury absentees.
Lascelles remains sidelined with an ACL injury and is expected to be sidelined for another few weeks at least.Harvey Barnes has suffered a thigh injury and his recovery schedule is a little behind,he is maybe two to three weeks away.
Howe has revealed that Wilson is back in training and that he has a chance of being involved against the Gunners on Wednesday night.
Joelinton is a doubt. The Brazilian had a knee brace on as a precaution and Newcastle will give him every chance to be fit.
As for Arsenal, the 5-1 victory over Manchester City gave them great encouragement, but they did not make any new signings in the winter window, and several injured players seemed unlikely to make it to the game against Newcastle United.
Jesus suffered an ACL injury in January - one that has ruled him out of the rest of the campaign.
Ben White will still be sidelined for a long time due to knee injury and whilst he is progressing closer to a return to action, that won’t come on Tyneside.
Tomiyasu is in the latter stages of his recovery from a knee injury, but he won’t play against Newcastle United.
As for the winger Saka, Arteta said: “We don’t know how long he is out and how many games he can play.”It appears the England winger's injury is more serious than expected and he is expected to be out for a while.
The above is the injury update of the two teams before the second round of the EFL Cup semi-final. Will Newcastle United, who are two goals ahead after the first round, advance to the next round, or will Arsenal win the away game in a comeback? We will wait and see.
