24 hours after the success of Napoli, Inter ignited the Serie A title race by beating Empoli 3-1. At the San Siro, all the goals came in the second half, with Lautaro, Dumfries and Thuram. The goal from former Inter striker Esposito was just a face-saving goal.
In the first half, the game was almost exclusively played in Empoli's half, but Inter failed to return to the locker room with a lead. Moreover, despite having the majority of the ball, the Nerazzurri had difficulty breaking through the Tuscan defensive barrier. The score at halftime was finally fixed at 0-0, but Inter were close to a goal.
Despite the few scoring chances, Lautaro was the most active player in the team and almost scored twice. In the 14th minute, the Inter captain forced Vazquez to create a miracle with a hook shot. Then, in the 26th minute, Toro also failed to punish Ismajili's defensive misjudgment and hit the goal frame.
At the start of the second half, Inter played in a similar style to the first half, continuing to lack rhythm. However, Lautaro broke the potentially complicated situation with a world-class performance. Ten minutes into the second half, the Argentine player led his team 1-0 with a wonderful long-range arc ball.
In the 69th minute, Thuram replaced Taremi. The French striker is Inter's top scorer this season with 14 goals. In the 80th minute, the Nerazzurri doubled their lead thanks to a corner kick from Dumfries, whose powerful shot left Vazquez no chance.
Inter controlled the game and it seemed to be over: however, in the final stages of the game, Esposito broke the deadlock of Inter's defense and equalized the score to 2-1. But Empoli didn't even have time to dream of a comeback, because Thuram immediately scored a goal on the counterattack to rewrite the score to 3-1.
The hosts secured a significant win, closing the gap with league leaders Napoli to three points, while Empoli's crisis continues, having picked up just one point in their last six games.
