Manchester United suffered a heavy defeat at home to Brighton on Sunday, with away winger Yankuba Minteh scoring and creating a goal, and the home goalkeeper Andre Onana's mistake made things worse.

Brighton also scored in the second half, with goals from Kaoru Mitoma and Georginio Rutter, and Joao Pedro's goal was also ruled out as an offensive foul by VAR.

Bruno Fernandes scored a penalty for Manchester United to tie the score at 1-1 at halftime, but after Brighton took the lead for the second time, Onana sent a low pass into the penalty area and Rutter easily scored the ball into the goal.

Brighton moved up to ninth place with 34 points, four points behind the top four. Manchester United also ranked 13th with 26 points from 22 games.

"Another loss at home. It's not acceptable, the way we conceded the goals. We can play some football but in small spaces of time, it's not consistent, and we get nervous and then we concede a goal," United manager Ruben Amorim said.

Brighton have won six of their last seven league games against United and their last three visits to Old Trafford.

Brighton secured their third goal after Onana's fatal mistake, leaving United to mourn their 10th league defeat of the season, their earliest double-digit loss since 1989-90.

"It's hard to play here but we stayed calm and played with confidence," Rutter said. "The season is long and we have to keep going like this, taking it game by game and we'll see at the end."
