Jontay Porter should have used a little more discretion.
The former NBA center and brother of Denver Nuggets wing Michael Porter Jr. was banned from the NBA last summer after pleading guilty to his part in a betting scandal, but the investigation is not over. Another individual has been arrested and charged, shedding more light on what Porter shared with his co-conspirators.
On Sunday, police arrested Shane Hennen at the Las Vegas airport. Federal prosecutors discovered Hennen received information from one of Porter's alleged co-conspirators that the former Toronto Raptor was planning to manipulate his on-court minutes to help bettors cash their prop bets, according to a complaint unsealed Monday.
Porter pled guilty in July to one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, and four others were charged and arrested in connection to Porter. Recent court documents show Porter texted his co-conspirators midgame to update them regarding his player props.
What did Jontay Porter's texts say?
According to court documents, during the Jan. 22, 2024 game between the Raptors and Memphis Grizzlies, Porter texted his co-conspirators from the locker room.
His first message read: "I went back to locker room to get eye checked on"
He then told his co-conspirators he was not sure if he would play much more and let them know he was not starting the second half.
Porter also made sure to let them know that if put in late in the game, he would make sure to "shoot a million shots."
He told two alleged co-conspirators hours before the Jan. 26 game that he would leave with an injury.
Hennan was also sent another message from Porter which read: "Hit under for the big numbers. I told [Co-Conspirator 2] no blocks no steals. I'm going to play first 2-3 minute stint off the bench then when I get subbed out tell them my eye killing me again."
This happened again on March 20, when Porter pulled himself from the game. Hennen bet $2,400 that Porter would not reach the over/under total for points in a game Porter played three minutes, tallying zero points.
Hennen was released on Monday, Jan. 13, and he will appear at a later date in front of a judge in the Eastern District of New York. When he was arrested, he had almost $10,000 in cash on him and several phones, and he told law enforcement agents he was going to Colombia for dental work.
