Open up your soccer scores app of choice and there’s a good chance the Premier League might be at the top of it. Not this weekend, however. Liverpool, Manchester City, United, Arsenal and the like will all take to the field, just not in the top division of English soccer.
The Premier League takes a back seat this weekend, with the FA Cup at the centre of the soccer calendar in England. The third round, in which there are 64 participants, is the stage at which the 20 top-flight clubs enter, with all competing in cup ties between Thursday (January 9) and Sunday (January 10).
Everton and Fulham were the first Premier League clubs to progress to the fourth round with victories over League One’s Peterborough United and Watford of the Championship respectively on Thursday.
FA Cup third round: Arsenal, Manchester United, City, Liverpool, Chelsea all involved
The tie of the round sees Arsenal host Manchester United at the Emirates, with Aston Villa against West Ham the only other all-Premier League tie.
Other intriguing matchups will see League Two team Salford City, partly owned by a raft of former United players, including David Beckham, visit Manchester City, with fellow fourth tier club Accrington Stanley taking on Liverpool at Anfield.
Morecambe, 91st of the 92 clubs in the English Football League, travel to Chelsea, while Bromley, also of the fourth division, are away to Newcastle United and non-league Tamworth host Tottenham Hotspur
When are the next Premier League games?
You don’t have to wait long at all to get your next Premier League fix, though. There is a full round of games this coming midweek, which includes four on Tuesday (January 14) and Wednesday (January 15), followed by two on Thursday (January 16).
Among the games are third-placed Nottingham Forest against league leaders Liverpool, and a North London derby between Arsenal and Spurs.
