The New York Yankees have a need in the infield and one MLB insider believes they will fill it by signing a veteran infielder.

Former MLB catcher and now analyst A.J. Pierzynski predicted the Yankees will sign Ha-Seong Kim to fill the void at second base.

“I got Kim going to the New York Yankees,” Pierzynski said on Foul Territory. “They need a second baseman, he’s a right-handed bat, he does some things, he can run, he can steal some bases, he plays good defense. He’s the perfect fit for them at second base.”

Kim completed his four-year $28 million deal with the San Diego Padres and could be an effective replacement for Gleyber Torres who signed with the Detroit Tigers.

As Pierzynski said, Kim plays good defense and would be a big defensive upgrade at second. His bat was also solid at the bottom of the order last season with the Padres, as he hit .233 with 11 home runs and 47 RBIs.

However, a major knock on Kim is a significant injury. The second baseman underwent season-ending shoulder surgery to repair a tear in the labrum in his right shoulder. Kim could miss time at the beginning of the 2025 MLB season due to that ailment.

Kim became a free agent after he declined his portion of an $8 million mutual option with the Padres. Spotrac projects he will earn a contract in the range of $49 million over four years.

Kim won the Gold Glove Award at shortstop in 2023 with the Padres.
