Yankees blockbuster Luis Arraez trade idea sends two Top-10 prospects to Padres

Flip a coin, and you just might be able to predict whether or not the New York Yankees trade for Luis Arraez.

Arraez, the San Diego Padres second baseman/first baseman who has won three consecutive batting titles, is widely speculated to be available, entering the final year of team control before he hits free agency.

There have been reports that the Yankees have stayed in contact with San Diego, but also reports that a trade is not imminent, nor perhaps even likely. One could reasonably change their opinion on whether the trade will happen based on the mood of the day.

It's all a big guessing game, and the guessing could continue all the way up until the trade deadline. But while we wait, it's worth considering what it might take from the Yankees to secure Arraez in a package.

Stephen Parello of FanSided recently attempted to answer that question. He proposed a package of MLB.com's No. 5 Yankees prospect, right-handed pitcher Will Warren, and No. 10 prospect, outfielder Everson Pereira, for Arraez.

"(San Diego's) two biggest needs are in the outfield, where they stand to lose last year's standout performer Jurickson Profar, and in the starting rotation, regardless of whether or not they move (Dylan) Cease," Parello wrote.

"(The Yankees) have a handful of big-league-ready arms and blocked outfield bats that are expendable, given the current roster construction. Specifically, (they) could offer up right-handed starter Will Warren and outfielder Everson Pereira in exchange for Arraez."

In theory, Warren and Pereira are expendable players at the top levels of the minors. The Yankees have a deep rotation and other young outfielders higher in the pecking order. But organizational depth is valuable and always gets tested during the course of the season.

It's a fair offer and one the Padres might well accept, depending on their feelings about dealing Arraez. But there are always endless excuses to turn down a trade, so the wait could continue a long time.
