The Boston Red Sox may be losing another player to free agency, per sources. Sox star reliever Chris Martin has turned down a lucrative contract offer from Boston in order to pitch closer to home, per Rob Bradford. That means the Arlington Texas native wanted to sign with the Texas Rangers, which he did, signing a one-year deal.
In his tenure with Boston, Martin was a beast. He had a 2.16 ERA, 96 strikeouts, and a K/9 of 9.0 in 100 games played.
This is also the second Sox player that was a Texas native that decided to play closer to home in the past few years. The first being starting pitcher Nathan Eovaldi, who also plays for the Rangers.
Martin was one of the Sox’s greatest late-game arms, so losing him was definitely a blow to the bullpen. The Sox did sign Aroldis Chapman earlier in the offseason though, who might be expected to take his place in the eighth inning.
Now, the Sox should really look into getting another reliever from free agency. According to Jim Bowden, the Sox are the front-runner for All-Star reliever Tanner Scott, and if they’re smart, they’ll go all in on him.
