Quarterbacks buying expensive and elaborate gifts for their offensive lines has become a tradition in the NFL, from Brock Purdy's trucks to Russell Wilson's $10,000 gift cards.
Bengals QB Joe Burrow rose to the occasion with this year's most unique gift.
Burrow gave swords to his teammates on the offensive line, rewarding the unit that has protected him well enough to put him on the doorstep of his first 40-touchdown season despite the Bengals' struggles.
While a leaky Cincinnati defense might deserve coal this year, Burrow gave the offensive line swords after a compromise down from a gift the quarterback wasn't totally comfortable with.
Here's what you need to know about the swords Burrow gifted to his teammates.
Joe Burrow swords gift, explained
Burrow told reporters he gifted swords to his offensive line as a compromise.
"They wanted guns ... and I was like, 'I don't know about guns, guys," Burrow said.
The former Heisman Trophy winner explained that he stayed "in the weapon mindset" and chose Samurai swords because they are "pretty dang cool."
Burrow revealed that an employee tracked down swords for the offensive line, and he explained that he allowed each player to choose his own sword. The swords "date back to the 1600s," NBC 5 Cincinnati's Charlie Clifford reported.
"The fact that [Burrow] bought me a sword, it's the most ancient form of respect," tackle Orlando Brown told reporters.
Guard Alex Cappa, meanwhile, said the sword was the best gift he's ever gotten "because it's so different."
Guns might have been a bridge too far — Burrow likely doesn't want to be part of any unintended consequences given players can't even make a gesture relating to guns during a celebration without being penalized — but perhaps Cincinnati will break out a Samurai sword celebration during Saturday's game against the Broncos.
If the Bengals manage to make a miraculous run to the playoffs, Burrow's Samurai swords could go from a fun gift to a rallying cry for the franchise.
