FC Barcelona recently made an attempt to strengthen their forward line by bidding £39.7 million (€47 million) for Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez, but the Reds were quick to reject the offer, according to a report by Indykaila News.
The move is part of Barcelona's ongoing efforts to address their striker position, but their approach has hit a snag.
The club are well aware that, as long as Robert Lewandowski remains at the club, it will be difficult to attract another top striker willing to play second fiddle.
Barcelona have long been in need of more depth in attack. After years of Lewandowski being the main striker, there is growing concern that relying on him alone is not sustainable.
The lack of a reliable back-up for Lewandowski has led to the club's sporting directors and head coach Hansi Flick stressing the need for a new addition to the forward line.
If the situation is not addressed, there is a real danger that the Polish striker will be overstretched, with negative consequences for both his performance and the team as a whole.
Initially, Barcelona's plan was to target a younger, promising player who could be acquired for a reasonable fee. One such player was Lille's Jonathan David.
However, David's style of play did not quite suit Barcelona's tactical needs, and the high financial demands of the deal made him less viable.
With this in mind, Barcelona sporting director Deco has been actively exploring other options on the market.
However, there is a clear understanding that any potential signings must be players capable of complementing Lewandowski rather than challenging his position in the squad.
This has narrowed the club's focus, as they are keen to find a solution that will add depth to their attack without disrupting the current dynamic of the squad.
As for Nunez, it seems unlikely that Barcelona would have made an offer as they are already struggling to keep hold of Dani Olmo, something that is far more important to him than signing a striker at the moment.
