In November, Olympique Lyonnais were in trouble after the DNCG (French National Governing Council) carried out an investigation that dealt a severe blow to the club's finances. Despite this, a January sale does not appear imminent.
While Lyon need to sell players to solve their financial problems, they are determined to wait for reasonable offers. The threat of relegation to Ligue 2 only adds to the urgency of finding a solution.
Rayan Cherki and Malik Fofana are among the players who could leave, albeit for less than their market value. Cherki's contract is up for renewal in September for another two years, giving Lyon some leverage. However, according to L'Equipe, a January move is still possible.
Cherki has publicly stated his dream of playing for Real Madrid, but has also attracted interest from Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain, with his future under scrutiny. Cherki did not sign a contract extension with Lyon this summer as he clearly wants to move to a bigger club. After constant negotiations, Cherki finally agreed to a one-year extension, but Lyon's poor financial situation has left Cherki's transfer situation uncertain.
According to Foot Mercato, Paris Saint-Germain are actively pursuing Cherki in the hope of securing a transfer in January next year. However, they face stiff competition from Liverpool and Leverkusen, both of whom are keen to sign the talented midfielder. Lyon have reportedly set their asking price at 30 million euros.
According to transfer pundit Fabrizio Romano, Paris Saint-Germain will not sign Cherki in January this year. Due to the complicated relationship between the two parties, the capital club have decided not to proceed with the transfer.
Meanwhile, The Sun suggest that Paris Saint-Germain and Dortmund are competing with Crystal Palace for Cherki's signature, while The Athletic reveal that West Ham United sporting director Tim Steidten is keeping a close eye on the 20-year-old.
