The Swedish prosecutor’s office confirmed on Thursday morning that it is closing the investigation into an alleged rape that occurred in Stockholm in October, in which Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappé was mentioned as a possible suspect.
Why was the alleged rape case linked to Mbappé dropped?
The public body cited a lack of evidence after a month of inquiries that failed to uncover any criminal activity.
“During the investigation, a person was identified with reasonable suspicion of rape and two cases of sexual harassment, but I consider the evidence insufficient to continue the procedure, and therefore the investigation is closed. The designated person has not been notified of any suspicion of a crime,” stated the prosecutor’s office in a release on Thursday.
After not being called up by the French national team for the October international break, Mbappé traveled to Stockholm, Sweden, where he went to a party with acquaintances.
Days later, Swedish media reported that a rape had occurred in the same hotel where the player had stayed, and that he was a “reasonable suspect” in the crime. The Swedish prosecutor’s office, without mentioning Mbappé, confirmed days later that it was launching an investigation to clarify the facts, which was closed this Thursday due to a lack of evidence, again without referencing the French national team captain.
