The Dallas Mavericks are in the market to make more upgrades after adding Klay Thompson during the offseason.
According to HoopsHype's Michael Scotto, two lob threats that helped Luka Doncic and the Mavericks exceed expectations last season will not be dangled in any talks as of now.
"Executives around the league have poked around to see whether Dallas would part with either center Daniel Gafford or Dereck Lively, but that has been met with initial resistance for now," Scotto wrote.
"Instead of parting with one of their coveted centers, the Mavericks can look at potential upgrades by dangling their first-round picks in 2025 and 2031," Scotto concluded.
Lively was a rookie last season, but he started contributing at a higher rate much quicker than many around the Mavs expected, including general manager Nico Harrison.
"I tried not to put a limitation on it," Harrison said. "I always felt he was going to help us. I just didn't know how long it was going to take. I felt he would help us this year. Would it be December? Would it be November? Would it be in February? I didn't know."
Dallas coach Jason Kidd took full advantage of the Mavs' big men athleticism, often throwing them out there for four-minute spurts.
In Game 3 of Dallas' series against the Los Angeles Clippers in the first round of the playoffs, they threw down 13 dunks, the second most in a playoff game in the past 25 years, according to ESPN Stats & Information research.
If Kidd had both bigs at his disposal during a different time period, he shared that he'd feature both of them more often.
“They both have sacrificed, they both have started,” Kidd said. “If it was the 80’s we would play them both at the same time. But unfortunately, it’s not the 80’s, so only one can play and right now D-Live is the starter.”
