Marten de Roon's deflected effort and a late header from Nicolò Zaniolo against his former club saw Roma suffer their fourth consecutive Serie A defeat, while Atalanta secured their eighth win on the spin.
The Giallorossi played their first home game under Claudio Ranieri, who lost away to Napoli but saw his team stage a great comeback to draw 2-2 with Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday. With Mario Hermoso injured and Nicolò Pisilli suspended, Paulo Dybala was back in the starting XI in a 3-5-2 formation. La Dea won seven Serie A games in a row and thrashed Young Boys 6-1 on Tuesday, although Davide Zappacosta, Ben Godfrey and Gianluca Scamacca were still out of action.
Leandro Paredes took a shot from way outside the box in the fourth minute, but Marco Carnesecchi was able to make the save. Manu Koné had a similar attempt a few minutes later, but his shot just missed the top corner and the goalkeeper was left stranded.
Ademola Lookman scored after 23 minutes, but he was offside when he redirected Raoul Bellanova's wayward volley at the back post.
Charles De Ketelaere just glanced an Ederson cross into the arms of Mile Svilar, and Mats Hummels stopped Mateo Retegui tapping in from six yards on an Odilon Kossounou pull-back from the byline.
Roma had a great chance right after the restart. Dovbyk stretched to reach a Dybala flick, but was kept onside by Matteo Ruggeri, as Carnesecchi managed to smother.
Atalanta took the lead at the end of a long attacking move when a clearance ended up at the end of the area to Marten de Roon, whose strike took a big deflection off Zeki Celik to completely catch Svilar off guard.
Hummels was limping badly after touching his thigh, and Roma almost equalised when Alexis Saelemaekers dummied a cross, cutting inside to find Gianluca Mancini at the back post. Unfortunately, the defender couldn't manage to steer it on target.
Bryan Cristante also had to come off due to a muscle issue, and Ederson should really have made it 2-0. He missed from six yards out, with Marco Brescianini rolling across from the left.
Zaniolo was booed even louder when he made it 2-0 to Atalanta in the last minute with a glancing header from Juan Cuadrado's corner. He got a nick off Mancini and the ball looped into the top corner from a tricky angle. He took off his jersey and rushed to celebrate with the away fans behind the goal, relishing this moment against his former club.
