Arsenal are reportedly in ‘advanced talks’ to appoint Roberto Olabe as new sporting director, giving their Alexander Isak pursuit a major boost.

Arsenal have been hunting for a new sporting director since Edu Gaspar’s surprise exit last month. The Brazilian, who played a pivotal role in reshaping Arsenal’s football operations, left the club to join Nottingham Forest, despite being offered a significant pay increase at the Emirates. The Gunners have since shifted their focus to finding an ideal candidate to fill the gap left by Edu's departure and recent developments suggest that Arsenal may have found their man.

Reports from Foot Mercato indicate that Arsenal are in advanced negotiations with Roberto Olabe, the highly regarded sporting director of Real Sociedad. Known for his strategic vision and knack for identifying talent, the 57-year-old has been a key figure in Sociedad’s recent success. Under his leadership, the La Liga side won their first major trophy in over 30 years by claiming the Copa del Rey in 2021. Moreover, they returned to the Champions League in the 2023-2024 season, marking their first appearance in the competition in a decade.

According to Sky Germany, Olabe’s potential move to Arsenal could have wider implications for the club's transfer plans. The Spaniard maintains a strong relationship with Alexander Isak, the 25-year-old striker who now plays for Newcastle United. Mikel Arteta views the Swedish forward as a potential summer transfer target to bolster his attacking options. Although Isak has a contract with the Magpies until 2028, it is believed that Olabe’s arrival at the Emirates could provide Arsenal with an advantage, thanks to their longstanding rapport.

Arteta’s Arsenal have undergone a dramatic transformation in recent years, with the club firmly reestablishing itself among Europe’s elite. And with Olabe’s proven ability to structure winning teams and recruit top-tier talent, the North London side could be poised for greater success both in England and in Europe. In the short-term, they will return to action against Manchester United on Wednesday in the Premier League at Emirates.
