There is a striker drawing significant attention due to his remarkable form with Sporting Lisbon and his impressive goal-scoring ability in both the Portuguese Primeira Liga and with the Swedish national team. This is Viktor Gyökeres, who has everything it takes to become a top target in upcoming transfer windows and could soon join a more high-profile club.
Following another standout performance with the Swedish national team in the 2024-25 UEFA Nations League, the 26-year-old forward spoke to the media and shared some intriguing insights about his future. In an interview with Fotbollskanalen, he addressed the departure of Rúben Amorim to the Premier League.
“Join Amorim at Manchester United? He probably already has forwards there,” Gyökeres remarked, clearly prepared for the question. “It’s sad to see him leave Sporting, but we understand his decision, of course. He’s been key for me – Amorim gave me the chance and helped me develop.”
These comments come as speculation began swirling about the striker and a potential move to Old Trafford following the official announcement of the Portuguese coach signing with the Red Devils.
However, his next statements cooled down the idea of a potential winter transfer departure from Sporting.
“I want to finish this season at Sporting. I love being here. A new club? We’ll see when the time comes. I want to play; that’s fundamental for me. There will also be other factors to consider.”
Gyökeres mixing with Cristiano and Haaland
The striker is among the top scorers in the group stage of the 2024-25 UEFA Nations League, having concluded his campaign in League C with five goals and three assists. He aims to play a key role in helping Sweden secure their place in League B during the next edition of the European national team competition.
While it’s true there were differences in league tiers compared to Cristiano Ronaldo with Portugal (League A) and Erling Haaland with Norway (League B), Gyökeres can proudly claim he finished with the same number of goals as the legendary Portuguese forward, trailing only the prolific Norwegian striker.
