Manchester United midfielder Mainoo says their FA Cup final win in May doesn't mean the season was a success.
The 19-year-old was a goalscorer in United's unexpected 2-0 victory over rivals Manchester City at Wembley to lift the club's 13th FA Cup trophy.
Wembley glory for United followed United's worst-ever Premier League finish, which is why Mainoo, who made his league debut in November of that season, feels despite the trophy United underachieved.
“A trophy brings hope. But it definitely didn’t make the season a success.," he told GQ.
“I won’t say it made the season a success for us as a team, but we definitely needed it.
"We couldn’t go into the summer with nothing, just finishing where we finished in the table."
Mainoo also revealed that the fact that United were underdogs in the final, gave him an added incentive to win on the day.
“I remember just the feeling around it was like, no one expects us to win,”
"They’d just written us off. I used that as motivation.”
