Barcelona reportedly players revelled in Rodri's surprise Ballon d'Or triumph as Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr was humbled on Monday evening.
The fallout continues over Vinicius Jr's defeat to Rodri in the voting for the 2024 Ballon d'Or award, with Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola and former Barcelona striker Sergio Aguero among the latest to have their say on the outcome. While Real Madrid were left appalled by Vinicius' snub, even refusing to attend the ceremony in Paris, Barcelona, fresh off a 4-0 drubbing over their rivals in the Clasico, were in a celebratory mood as they cheered Lamine Yamal's success and Vinicius' heartbreak.
According to Sport, Rodri's win was celebrated by Barcelona players as they slowly found out that the Spaniard, not Vinicius, was set to win the award. Players began to discover the results before media rumours suggested a Real Madrid boycott of the event, and Barca trio Yamal, Dani Olmo and Pau Cubarsi, who attended the ceremony, helped to confirm the rumours when they sent messages in the club's WhatsApp group about Vinicius' absence.
Several Barcelona players, including Yamal, play alongside Rodri for the Spain national team, hence their delight in his triumph. But some players were also happy to see Vinicius defeated and felt it was karma as the Brazilian continues to make enemies among the Barca squad each time there is a Clasico.
Vinicius will try to move on from his personal setback when Real Madrid face Valencia on Saturday. Barcelona, now six points ahead in La Liga, host Espanyol a day later.
