Spanish football suffered another depressing incident of racism after 17-year-old Lamine Yamal scored the third goal during El Clásico with his strike in the 77th minute putting Barcelona 0-3 ahead at the Santiago Bernabeu.
As the Barça player celebrated his goal with teammate Raphinha, a barrage of abuse was hurled from home supporters in the corner where the celebration took place. A series of videos on social media showcase Madrid fans shouting: “fucking black” and “fucking Moor” (puto negro/moro) at the Blaugrana striker.
In another video recorded in a similar location towards the of the game as Yamal prepared to take a corner, towards the end of the contest, fans continued to abuse the teenager with cries of ‘go and sell tissues at traffic lights’ and even “fucking Mena’ a term used to describe young immigrants (Menores Extranjeros No Acompañados) with Yamal’s father, Mounir Nasraoui, hailing from Morocco.
Madrid and LaLiga issue statements
Both LaLiga and Real Madrid issued statements on Sunday morning condemning the incidents.
“Real Madrid strongly condemns any kind of behaviour involving racism, xenophobia or violence in football and sport, and deeply regrets the insults that a few fans uttered last night in one of the corners of the stadium. Real Madrid has opened an investigation in order to locate and identify the perpetrators of these deplorable and despicable insults so that the appropriate disciplinary and judicial measures can be taken”.
The videos chronice another chapter of racism at a Spanish stadium and as we’ve seen recently following incidents at Valencia’s Mestalla and Getafe’s Coliseum, Madrid could be in hot water due to the unacceptable behaviour of these individuals.
