Rotherham vs Wrexham

Match preview

Rotherham United head into the weekend looking to continue their improved run in League One, having seemingly put a poor start to their campaign behind them in recent weeks.

Having been relegated from the Championship last season, the South Yorkshire outfit set out to bounce back under Steve Evans this term, but a four-game winless streak that culminated in a 1-1 draw at Shrewsbury Town left them bottom of the division with just seven points from eight games.

That disappointing draw was the start of an unbeaten run for the Millers, however, as they recorded their second and third consecutive wins of the season, triumphing away at Cambridge United when Sam Nombe scored the only goal of the game in stoppage time before he and Hakeem Odoffin helped the Millers to a 2-1 victory over Reading.

Looking to move into the top half of the table with a third successive win, Evans' men then visited Peterborough United on Saturday and looked in good shape as Nombe, Mallik Wilks and Jonson Clarke-Harris gave them a 3-1 lead at the break, but they had to settle for a point as Joe Rafferty's own goal and Emmanuel Fernandez's consolation secured a 3-3 draw.

Rotherham United's recent improvement has given them confidence and momentum, and they will be hoping to extend their unbeaten run to five games - three of which have been wins - with a win at home on Saturday.

However, they face a stern test as the visitors will be looking for a second successive win to strengthen their position in the automatic promotion places.

Wrexham, who are looking to continue their remarkable rise to prominence following back-to-back promotions to England's third tier, have made a fine start to the 2024-25 season and currently sit second in League One, having collected 20 points from their opening 10 games.

After a near-perfect start to the campaign, winning four and drawing one of their opening five games, Phil Parkinson's side suffered their first two defeats in a difficult run of fixtures, losing to Birmingham City and Stevenage, before a win over Crawley Town and a draw with Leyton Orient saw them bounce back before the international break.

The Red Dragons did so in style, winning 4-1 in Wales as James McClean opened the scoring, Jack Marriott restored the lead and Elliott Lee and McClean put the game beyond doubt with second-half goals.

Now back in a strong position, just two points behind leaders Birmingham City, Wrexham will be looking to continue their impressive start to the season with a big scalp on Saturday.
