Luis Enrique's late appearance made all the difference, and despite a lacklustre and disappointing performance, the Selecao secured a crucial win.
Brazil beat Chile 2-1 in the CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying match on Thursday night, with an 89th-minute goal securing three points. The win sees them move up from sixth to fourth in the standings, overtaking Ecuador and Bolivia.
Ultimately, the result is the same, but it was a disappointing showing for one of South America's most legendary teams on the road.
The Selecao got off to a slow start and paid the price within 60 seconds. Veteran striker Eduardo Vargas scored a great header to put Chile 1-0 up in the first minute of the game.
However, just before half-time, Selecao striker Igor Jesus headed home to level the score. A great cross from Manchester City winger Savinho gave the Botafogo striker what he was hoping for.
It was their second real chance of the night. In the 89th minute, Botafogo's Luis Enrique doubled their lead, firing low into the bottom left corner with a minute left in regulation.
The Dorival Youth players didn't have their best game, and without their star player Vinicius Junior, who is injured, the team didn't show what they're capable of.
Meanwhile, the Selecao coach might be feeling a bit uneasy, even with the win. His attacking lineup was tricky to work with and his midfield decisions were a bit confusing. Both choices cost them nearly two points.
After nine games, Brazil is in fourth place with 13 points, two points behind third-placed Uruguay (who have played one less game and their game against Peru hasn't started yet). Brazil will play Peru, who are currently at the bottom of the group, in their next game. They'll be fighting hard at home to try to consolidate their position in the standings. After all, there's only a three-point difference between fourth and eighth place.
