While Bolivia will be an even tougher proposition at the new venue, they also ended one of the longest winless streaks in the competition last month to catapult themselves into qualification contention.

Their historic away win in Chile was Bolivia's first away win in 67 qualifiers since a 7-1 thrashing of Venezuela in 1993, the last time they reached the finals.

Some will see that as a good omen, and given how well they bounced back after losing their first four qualifiers, it cannot be ruled out.

The appointment of Oscar Villegas, who took over after the Copa America exit in the summer, has clearly been an inspired one.

As ever, though, Bolivia's home form will have to be near perfect if they are to have any chance of reaching the finals, with their next away game coming next week against Argentina.

It would not be surprising if Bolivia lost all their remaining away games, so with 15 points still up for grabs on home soil, Villegas will be hoping his side can pick up close to the maximum if they are to sneak into the top seven.

Seventh is good enough for a place in the intercontinental play-offs, and Bolivia enter the window level on points with Paraguay, who currently occupy that position.

While home advantage is Bolivia's weapon of choice, their next opponents, Colombia, will provide a stern test given the form they have been enjoying under Nestor Lorenzo.

Los Cafeteros are still unbeaten over 90 minutes under Lorenzo, who has now been in charge for 28 games, with the extra-time defeat to Argentina in the Copa America final the only blemish on his record.

Colombia avenged that defeat by beating the Albiceleste in their last outing, and the timing was perfect, as they went into the game on the back of a 1-1 draw with a Peru side who sit bottom of the standings.

The result leaves Colombia just two points behind Argentina and a comfortable seven points clear of the automatic qualifying spots, with a return to the world stage looking likely after missing out on the 2022 finals in Qatar.

Maintaining their recent form against Bolivia will take them a step closer to that goal, as Colombia are unbeaten in their last 13 meetings with their future opponents, winning 10 of those.

However, like so many others, they struggle with altitude, having won just two of their last eight visits, and a 4-0 defeat in La Paz in 2003 was a particular low point, but Lorenzo will be hoping for a much better first trip to El Alto, especially given that Colombia beat Bolivia away in 2011 and 2016.

Bolivia have one of the youngest and most inexperienced squads in South America, made all the more so by the fact that 37-year-old goalkeeper Carlos Lampe is currently out injured after being sent off against Chile last month.

Henry Vaca is also on the sidelines for the hosts, but the youngsters are certainly finding their feet at this level, even if only one member of the squad has more than 40 caps, and 12 of the 28 players have two or fewer.

Colombia's supporters will have been pleased to see Luis Diaz kept out of the starting line-up at Liverpool at the weekend, but they were quickly disappointed when right-back Daniel Munoz was forced off with a muscular problem just minutes into the same game at Crystal Palace.

Diaz and Jhon Duran have been in spectacular form in the Premier League this season, and the latter is now expected to take over from Jhon Cordoba as the central striker for his country.

Captain James Rodriguez may not get many minutes for Rayo Vallecano, but that never seems to affect his level for Los Cafeteros, as his man-of-the-match performance against Argentina showed.
