Lois Openda's second-half goal gave RB Leipzig a narrow 1-0 win over Heidenheim in the Bundesliga at the Voith Arena.
The two teams' recent records vary. Leipzig is undefeated in 16 games but had just lost 3-2 to Juventus. Heidenheim had a good performance to win in European competition for the first time. The game started slowly, with neither side creating many chances early on. There were numerous fouls, disrupting the rhythm of the game. In the 18th minute, Heidenheim's Jonas Föhrenbach was shown the first yellow card. Both teams got into the game, with Pillinger testing Gulacsi and Leipzig's Šeško firing wide, but neither had many clear chances. The best chance of the first half fell to Xavi Simons in the 42nd minute, but he was unable to find the back of the net. Muller made a fine save to keep the scoreline level at 0-0 at halftime.
Lois Oponda's second-half goal was his fourth in the Bundesliga this season. Both sides played with more urgency at the start of the second half. Leipzig thought they had broken the deadlock in the 53rd minute when Benjamin Schesko headed home a goal, but a VAR review found a foul during the attack and the goal was ruled out.
However, the visitors didn't have to wait long for their first goal. In the 59th minute, Oponda showed he could finish with clinical precision, firing home from a tight angle at the near post to give Leipzig a 1-0 lead. The goal inspired Heidenheim, who almost equalised when Jan Schöpner's powerful shot hit the crossbar in the 68th minute. Heidenheim then pulled out all the stops to try and equalise. The home team created a lot of chances, and Marvin Pillinger and Adrian Beck's shots were both saved by Peter Gulacsi. Leipzig still had threats in the counterattack, and Oponda's shot hit the post in the 88th minute.
At the end of the game, RB Leipzig temporarily ranked first with a record of 4 wins and 2 draws, while newly promoted Heidenheim had slipped to 9th place in the standings despite a good start.
