October 7, 2024, in the sixth round of the Bundesliga, Stuttgart faced Hoffenheim. Last year's Bundesliga runner-up seemed to have lost its competitiveness this season. With 2 wins, 2 draws and 1 loss before the start of this season, it seemed to have fallen behind in the championship race. The opponent Hoffenheim's form this season is not very good. Hoffenheim, who qualified for the European Cup last year, has suffered 4 consecutive losses in the Bundesliga. Both sides need victory and points in this game to ensure their position in the Bundesliga.
Ermedin Demirović's late goal earned Stuttgart a point in a dramatic 1-1 draw with Hoffenheim. It was a tense finish after Valentin Gendrey's early effort looked to have won it for the visitors.
Both teams were quick to get started after the opening whistle, creating some great chances in the first ten minutes. Hoffenheim came close to taking the lead in the fourth minute when Adam Hložek rounded the keeper, but his shot was cleared off the line by Maximilian Mittelstädt. Stuttgart responded quickly, with Atakan Karazor's header also being cleared off the line by Gendrey just four minutes later.
As the first half went on, Stuttgart started to control the ball more, but it was Hoffenheim who scored first. In the 45th minute, Mittelstädt made a poor clearance, allowing Gendrey to pounce on a loose ball. The Frenchman, who was making his first Bundesliga start, slotted calmly past Alexander Nübel, giving Hoffenheim a 1-0 lead. The goal, a cool finish against the run of play, was a harsh lesson for Stuttgart, who couldn't turn their possession into clear-cut chances.
Valentin Gendrey scored past Alexander Nübel just before half-time, giving Hoffenheim a surprise lead. In the second half, Stuttgart really upped their game in search of the equaliser. Chris Führich and Josha Vagnoman came on at half-time to give the team a boost in attack. The home side kept up the pressure with their possession play and Hoffenheim's defence, led by the solid Anton Stach, held firm.
Hoffenheim goalkeeper Oliver Baumann was on top form, making some crucial saves to deny Deniz Undav and Mittelstädt. As the clock ran down, it looked like Hoffenheim's resilience would be rewarded with a hard-fought victory. But in the 96th minute, a shot from Undav struck Akpoguma's arm, which led to a VAR review and a penalty for Stuttgart. Ermedin Demirović took the penalty, but Baumann saved it first time. He followed up the rebound and scored to level the scores in the 99th minute. This late equaliser extended Stuttgart's impressive scoring run to 22 consecutive Bundesliga matches.
