The Uruguay international completed a £51m ($60m) transfer from Paris Saint-Germain on Friday, putting an end to the Old Trafford club's long pursuit of the midfielder, on the final day of the summer transfer window.
The 23-year-old made the switch a day and a half before Erik ten Hag's team host their fierce rivals in their next match, but they were not able to register him as part of their squad in time to for him to be eligible for selection. The paperwork would have to have been processed by noon on Friday, but United did not announce Ugarte's arrival until late in the evening.
Ugarte has left PSG after just one season with the French side in which he was unable to establish himself as a regular starter under Luis Enrique. United made the former Sporting CP star a priority target as they looked to strengthen their midfield.
Ugarte was absent from the PSG squad in their early fixtures of the 2024-25 campaign, so United boss Ten Hag may have avoided throwing him into the action against Liverpool even if he had been registered in time. Red Devils fans will likely get the chance to see him in action against Southampton on September 14.
