Six years on from the last Manchester United goal at Anfield, Lisandro Martínez fired the Red Devils into a shock lead on Merseyside.
Little was expected of Ruben Amorim’s floundering United side ahead of kick-off but they showed impressive resilience in the first half, coming close to opening the scoring through Rasmus Hojlund. The scores remained level at the break but, just minutes into the second half, the visitors found a breakthrough.
Lisandro Martínez surged upfield to apply pressure to the Liverpool midfield, helped his team regain possession and continued his run forward. After a neat touch from Bruno Fernandez on the edge of the Liverpool box Martínez found himself one-on-one and rifled the ball into the top corner.
Martínez’s goal was the first for a Manchester United player at Anfield since December 2018, when Jose Mourinho’s side fell to a 3-1 defeat. Jesse Lingard was on the scoresheet that day, playing alongside the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic in the United team. Lingard is currently playing for FC Seoul in K League 1.
United’s joy was short-lived after Martínez' superbly-taken opener. Just minutes later Cody Gakpo skipped past Matthijs de Ligt and curled a strike into the top corner, setting up a thrilling final 30 minutes on Merseyside.
